What is Maritime and Supply Chain Management?
The Maritime and Supply Chain Management (MSCM) major provides students with an integrated working knowledge of maritime operations and supply chain management to meet the needs of regional, national, and international shipping; intermodal transportation; and distribution industries.
Supply Chain Management (SCM) examines management and internet technology systems for distribution, materials handling, inventory control, transportation planning, and facilities location and analysis.SCM coordinates the movement and storage of raw materials, work-in-process inventory, and finished goods from origin to consumer.
What careers are available in Maritime and Supply Chain Management?
Students graduating with a degree in Maritime and Supply Chain Management will be prepared with the knowledge and skill sets to work in a variety of industries including storage and distribution, logistics analysis, intermodal transportation, import/export operations, and trade and business development.Students may also pursue careers focusing on terminal operations with port authorities, liner services, and cruise and ferry lines.
What Will I Study?
MSCM students will complete the core courses required of all Business Administration majors.These courses include; accounting, economics, statistics, management, marketing, finance, management, and information systems.
The major courses in Maritime and Supply Chain Management include; International Shipping, Shipping Management, Port Management, and Supply Chain Management and Logistics.Moreover, students will receive a multi-discipline approach to the major by selecting elective courses, such as: Forecasting and Quality Management Systems, Purchasing Management, Management Science, Simulation and Modeling Analysis for Business Systems, Transportation Economics, Employee Relations Problems and Practices, and Labor Management Relations.
International Shipping (MSCN 370) satisfies students' International Elective required by the University.
What Educational Opportunities are Available outside the Classroom?
The Old Dominion University Maritime Institute works with many international and local organizations to offer students internships and co-op opportunities throughout Hampton Roads, the United States, and internationally.Students can meet, interact, and interview with firms whose core business focus is on logistical initiatives.Firms range from shipping lines and railroads to third party logistics providers, warehousing and distribution centers, and port authorities.
MSCM students are encouraged to attend monthly industry breakfast meetings sponsored by Old Dominion University's Maritime Institute and local logistics organizations during the fall and spring semesters.Here, students can listen to industry and government speakers discuss current events, concerns, and innovations.
What Other Opportunities are Associated with a Maritime and Supply Chain Management Major?
Graduate work
Students may continue their education in Old Dominion University's Master in Business Administration Program.ODU is the only U.S. university to offer a concentration in Maritime and Port Logistics Management as part of an MBA program.Moreover, the University works closely with several international universities that offer advanced degrees in Transportation and Maritime Management.

Scholarships and Awards
The Propeller Club of the United States, Port of Old Dominion University Scholarship is awarded yearly to one deserving undergraduate student pursuing a maritime and logistics-related course curriculum.
International Study
Maritime and Supply Chain Management majors are encouraged to participate in ODU's study abroad programs. "Transportation Systems and Trade Flows within the European Union," offered by the College of Business and Public Administration, gives students an opportunity to experience firsthand the importance of the transportation industry in the European Union. During this month-long program, students will visit major seaports, ship lines, ship and airline manufacturing facilities, and the EU Parliament and Council (the main governing bodies of the EU).Students may also tour the cultural and historical attractions in each city.
Can I Minor in Maritime and Supply Chain Management?
No, currently the degree is only offered for students that select the degree as their major.However, this program is a great second major for students within the College of Business and Public Administration.
