Joan Mann joined the department of Information Technology and Decision Sciences in 1995. She teaches the courses in global information systems, strategic information systems and introductory courses in information systems at the undergraduate and graduate level. Her research investigates runaway information systems projects, the IT-User (or IS-User) gap, organizational alignment (including IT) and the workplace climate in the IT department.
Professor Mann received her Ph.D. from the Georgia State University in 1996, B.S. in Management Science in 1975 from the State University College of NY at Geneseo, Masters in Library Science in 1976 and MBA in 1980 from the State University of NY at Buffalo.
Expertise in the following areas:
Preventing and Dealing with Runaway Projects - 1. Training to increase the understanding of what causes runaways and how to prevent them 2. A survey that will tell employees exactly what would entrap them in a runaway project 3. Support for turning around a runaway project
Handling the IS-User Gap 1. Measuring the gap between the IT function and the rest of an organization 2. Assisting the IT function with marketing and impression management
Strategic Use of Information and Information Technology 1. Measuring and improving the information management and use by non-IT personnel 2. Aligning the organizational focus and information activities including systems
