Constant Hall NewsJanuary, 2008Message From the DeanDr. Nancy Bagranoff“May you live in interesting times.” It certainly feels that way as we start off this new year. We are thrilled that we achieved our Maintenance of AACSB accreditation last fall with no restrictions or caveats. So we thought perhaps we could take a little break but it was not to be. The college is working on several initiatives and we are busier than ever. In addition, Old Dominion University has a new Provost. We are happy to welcome Dr. Carol Simpson to her new job as academic leader of Old Dominion. We have also learned that we will be getting a new President! Roseann Runte is leaving to take a position as President of Carleton University in Canada and we wish her well but feel just a little unsettled!
As for the college, we aren’t changing our leadership, but we will be losing some of our senior faculty members this year who are going to take advantage of an early retirement incentive offered by the University. As a result of this activity and a few new positions we have, we are searching for several faculty members. We have recently hired a new Assistant Professor in Marketing and an Associate Professor in Accounting to start next fall. We are also working to recruit and hire two chaired faculty, the E.V. Williams Chair in Marketing and the Robert M. Stanton Chair in Real Estate and Economic Development. We also have a search under way for a new Director of our Executive Development Center . There is of course, much other news, and we hope you will enjoy reading about it in this Newsletter!
Reaffirmation of AACSB Accreditation
We are delighted to announce that on December 14, 2007, Old Dominion University's College of Business and Public Administration achieved reaffirmation of accreditation of its degree programs in business and accounting by recent action of the Board of Directors of AACSB International - The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. The official announcement will be made this spring at the international conference in Hawaii. To achieve accreditation, business programs must satisfy the expectations of a wide range of quality standards relating to strategic management of resources, interactions of faculty and students in the educational process, and achievement of learning goals in degree programs. These standards are mission-linked. During the accreditation process, Old Dominion University was visited and evaluated by business school deans and accounting educators with detailed knowledge of management education, applying accreditation standards that are widely accepted in the educational community. AACSB International is an association of more than 1,100 educational institutions, businesses and other organizations in 70 countries that are dedicated to the advancement of business education worldwide. AACSB International is the longest serving and largest global accrediting body for business schools that offer undergraduate, master's, and doctoral degrees in business and accounting. The association also is the business education community's professional development organization, conducting a wide array of conference and seminar programs at various locations around the world. Faculty/Staff NewsDr. Shaomin Li Published in Harvard Business Review
Dr. Shaomin Li, Professor of Management and International Business, has published an article in the prestigious Harvard Business Review. The article, “Mao’s Pervasive Influence on Chinese CEOs,” is an exploration of the influence the late Chinese Communist Party Chairman Mao Zedong continues to have on the professional tactics employed by top Chinese business leaders. Dr. Li and his co-authors, Kuang S. Yeh, of National Sun Yat-Sen University in Taiwan and Garry D. Bruton of Texas Christian University in Fort Worth , studied high-level business executives in China who utilize management tactics that emulate the methods used by Chairman Mao to consolidate his power, subjugate his subordinates, and maintain the support of the public. “Our research on the practices and attitudes of Chinese CEOs offers abundant evidence that Mao’s principles continue to influence top executives: All but one of 15 CEOs we interviewed told us they often turned to Mao’s teachings for management ideas,” the team wrote.
The team’s research could prove particularly valuable to multinational firms seeking to create joint ventures with Chinese companies. Li and his colleagues suggest multinational that firms familiarize themselves with the culture of their Chinese business partners. They also recommend establishing a clearly defined management structure. “A multinational that chooses to work with a CEO who uses those tactics needs to have effective procedures—both formal and informal—in place for monitoring the Chinese leadership,” the team wrote.
Since its release, the article has generated substantial international interest. The article is posted on Harvard Business Review’s “Conversation Starter” website and comments have been posted from around the world. The article and comments are available at http://conversationstarter.hbsp.com/2007/12/maos_pervasive_influence_on_ch.html?cm_mmc=npv-_-listserv-_-Dec2007-_-GlobalBus.
The global Chinese edition of Harvard Business Review published a feature story on the research and included a photograph of Dr. Li. “China-Pol,” the largest network of China scholars, has posted the article and generated lively discussion. Additionally, a journalist from Business Week interviewed Dr. Li about the article.
Research Confirms CBPA is “Major Player” in Advertising Research
The article provides an overview of advertising scholarship in terms of author productivity and institutional affiliation over the ten-year period from 1997-2006. Included is an examination of two bodies of scholarship - articles and authors reflected in the top three specialty advertising journals, as well as in seventeen journals across a variety of disciplines that have published advertising scholarly articles.
The research indicates that the CBPA is a major player in advertising research in the world when examining just the three top journals (Journal of Advertising, Journal of Advertising Research, and Journal of Current Issues in Research in Advertising), where the College ranks #23 out of 394 world academic institutions. This is largely due to articles published by Dr. Kiran Karande, Professor of Marketing; Dr. Yuping Liu, Assistant Professor of Marketing; and Dr. Ford. When examining the broader base of journals publishing advertising research, the College ranks #47 out of 523 world institutions. These data place the College in the top 6% of all scholarship published in the top advertising journals and in the top 9% of all advertising scholarship over the last 10 years. This is a significant accomplishment, especially when one considers that when comparable studies were done in prior decades, the College was not a major player in this arena.

[Back to Upcoming Events][Back to Top]Student NewsInternet Marketing Class Website “Protocol Analysis” for Sentara Healthcare
Dr. Yuping Liu’s fall 2007 “Marketing on the Internet” class conducted an in-depth assessment of Sentara Healthcare’s website. The project requested by Sentara through a CBPA graduate now working as a consultant for the healthcare provider.
Students used a process called “protocol analysis” to identify flaws in the website design and determine if any aspects of the website cause users to become confused and frustrated. The students identified three potential user scenarios for Sentara’s website – a cancer patient, a new resident with heart health problems, and an individual seeking assistance for an elderly parent. Teams of students created “Internet task lists” for each of the scenarios, itemizing the tasks that individuals in each group were likely to attempt when using the website.
Volunteers were recruited to assume the user roles and try to complete the tasks on one of the lists, using the existing Sentara website. A total of 31 sessions was conducted over a two-day period, with students present to observe participant reactions. In addition, the sessions were taped by a videographer provided by Sentara. Participants were asked to speak aloud while working on the task list, voicing positive and negative impressions as they navigated the site.
The students then analyzed the observations and video tapes, creating a final report that detailed problem areas and provided suggestions for addressing those problems. Representatives from Sentara were very pleased with the report, noting that the students’ work will help them proceed with a total re-design of the website. Additionally, because the website project will take several months to complete, the students’ findings will help designers prioritize the content that should be addressed.
