Message From the Dean

Dr. Nancy Bagranoff

As always, this newsletter contains quite a lot of news about “the doings” of our faculty, staff, and students.  Recently the University noted Old Dominion faculty are gaining national and international attention for their research.  As I look at the research accomplishments of the faculty in this college, it is apparent that we are increasing our own scholarship, both in terms of the quantity of it and, more importantly, the quality.  Books, articles, keynote speeches – all are the products of faculty in the College of Business and Public Administration.

Scholarship is not limited to the faculty.  Several staff members are completing degrees or making progress in them.  You’ll see in the Newsletter that Jennifer Usis and Tambre Anderson both received their Masters degree in December.  Three of our doctoral students, Hien Nguyen, Ahmed El Bakry, and Rahnuma Ahsan, presented papers at various academic conferences and Chad Gerber was named an Outstanding Scholar by the Alumni Association.

Next fall we will be visited by our peer review team from the Association of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).  We are getting ready for their visit by preparing a Maintenance of Accreditation report, compiling information on the assessment of our programs, and living our strategic plan.  With respect to our plan, we are working this year on a number of initiatives related to ethics and global business, two of the themes in our mission statement.  Cynthia Cooper, WorldCom’s internal auditor and whistle blower, recently spoke to students and at the Economics Club of Hampton Roads.  David Goode is scheduled to talk about ethical leadership as part of our Landmark Executive-in-Residence series in March.

We plan to engage students to develop a Student Code of Ethics for our business majors, and we began a project to Stop Plagiarism.  With respect to global business, there is a new Study Abroad planned for Summer 2007.  Led by Professor Larry Filer, this trip will include a tour of the ports of Europe.  We are working with a number of universities to develop relationships that will allow for increased numbers of students to study abroad and more faculty exchange and research collaboration.

As always, Happy Reading!
