May, 2006

Message From the Dean

Dr. Nancy Bagranoff

Greetings!  This edition of the Constant Hall News is our longest yet.  I think that says it all - we’ve been very busy.  I thought this would be a packed issue, because I noted that in the past few weeks we’ve been featured in the Virginian Pilot four times!  Once for our new undergraduate major in Maritime and Supply Management, in commentary by our Economics Forecasting team about the Ford plant closing, for Professor John Ford’s research on non-profit organizations, and in a feature article about the Etiquette Dinners held by Judy White in our Career Management Center.  We also include information about the many awards won for the year.  Please read on…

Journal Founded & Edited by Dr. Doukas Added to SSCI

The journal European Financial Management, founded and edited by Dr. John Doukas, Professor of Finance and eminent scholar, has been selected for coverage in Thomson Scientific’s Social Science Citation Index (SSCI).

Nearly 2000 journals are evaluated annually by Thomson Scientific, with only 10-12% selected for SSCI coverage. Each journal goes through an extensive evaluation process that includes numerous qualitative and quantitative criteria. These include the journal's basic publishing standards such as timeliness of publication and application of peer review; editorial content;  the international diversity of its authorship, and citation factors.

Coverage in SSCI significantly increases a journal’s accessibility for researchers.

Judy White, CMC, Receives National Recognition for “Job Fair Dummy” Campaign

The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) has given special recognition to a program developed by Judy White, Career Management Center liaison to the CBPA.

When surveys of employers participating in University job fairs included complaints that students do not attend in appropriate professional attire, Judy created a campaign called "Don't Be a Job Fair Dummy," that ran for a month before the March 2006 job fair, the largest ever at ODU. The goal of the campaign was to increase the number of students who attended the job fair properly dressed. It was comprised of four components:

·        Student education, including featuring the campaign on the CMC web site (complete with links to information on suitable attire); a brochure, using photos of current students dressed for class, dressed for a casual day of work, and dressed for the job fair; posters; and a seminar “How to Work a Job Fair.”

·        An element of amusement. Using male and female mannequins donated by Dillard’s department store. The well-dressed, but headless, dummies were named Jane and Jabari and traveled to student events around campus in the weeks leading up to the job fair.

·        Employer involvement.  In addition to Dillard's participation, Target sponsored "Is Your Image on Target?”, featuring a nationally recognized image coach demonstrated to students the difference in appearance that the correct clothes and colors can make.

·        Rewards. A prize of  $500 was awarded to the student group that had the highest percentage of their total membership attend the job fair dressed for success, and individual students registered for a drawing for an iPod.

Jane and Jabari also attended the job fair to demonstrate to students the ideal job fair look and to show employers that efforts were being made to improve students' appearance.
