Constant Hall NewsMay, 2008Message From the DeanDr. Nancy BagranoffGreetings from the Dean’s Office. As you will see once again in this newsletter, we’ve been very, very busy. What is most exciting is the number of awards won by our faculty, students, and staff. This is the second year in a row that a CBPA faculty member won the Tonelson Alumni Award – the second year ever for a faculty member in the College of Business and Public Administration to win that prestigious award. Faculty members are also receiving recognition from external sources, such as the ranking of our faculty members’ research in international business. That ranking puts ODU faculty as number 17 in international business research productivity – ahead of many very well known national programs. The CBPA also gave our first Adjunct Teaching Award. This award was conceived to honor the great work done by our part-time faculty and the first year recipient was Daniel Lahne. Our students also won many awards given this semester, again from “inside” ODU and also outside. Amanda Doherty, an MBA student, was selected by the Board of Regents of the Eno Transportation Foundation to participate in the 16th annual Eno Leadership Development Conference in Washington, D.C., May 19-22. Selection for the Conference is highly competitive, with only 20 of the country’s top graduate students chosen each year. Tarsha Turner, a longtime staff member in the College of Business and Public Administration, won our Outstanding Staff award. I hope that you will enjoy reading about these accolades and more in this edition of the Constant Hall News. Have a wonderful summer! |

[Back to Upcoming Events][Back to Top]Student NewsAmanda Doherty Selected for Eno Leadership Conference Amanda Doherty was selected by the Board of Regents of the Eno Transportation Foundation to participate in the 16th annual Eno Leadership Development Conference in Washington, DC, May 19-22. Selection for the Conference is highly competitive, with only 20 of the country’s top graduate students chosen each year. Designated as “Eno Fellows,” the students attend a week of meetings with federal officials and leaders of business and non-profit organizations. The Conference provides attendees with a first-hand look at how the nation's transportation policies are debated, shaped, formed, and ultimately adopted and applied. Students have the opportunity to meet top government officials, leaders of associations, and members of Congress and their staff. The ultimate goal of the Conference is to better equip students to understand the policy-making process that will become increasingly more important as they pursue a career in transportation. Amanda was nominated for the Conference by Dr. Wayne Talley, Professor of Economics and Port & Maritime studies. According to Dr. Talley, he has submitted student applicants for the Eno Leadership Conference several times in the past; however Amanda is the first from ODU CBPA to be accepted. Dr. Talley noted that attendees at the Conference are typically students from universities with large transportation programs, such as Northwestern, University of Texas, Southern California, MIT, Texas A&M, and the University of Michigan. The fact that Amanda was able to compete successfully for a space at the 2008 Conference speaks very highly, both for Amanda and for the CBPA Port & Maritime program. An August 2007 summa cum laude graduate with a double major in Finance and Economics, Amanda recently completed her first year in the MBA program with a concentration in Port and Maritime Management. She is currently Junior Vice President of the ODU Student Propeller Club. This summer she will intern in the Marketing/Logistics department at Norfolk Southern. As a first year PhD student in Business Administration with a Finance Specialization, Boris, who taught for the first time in the fall of 2007, received outstanding student evaluations for his Introductory Corporate Finance course. Graduate Program Director Dr. Sylvia Hudgins attributes Boris’ success in the classroom evolves to his attitude about teaching. In his Philosophy of teaching, Boris writes, “I believe my ultimate responsibility as a teacher is to create a learning environment that facilitates the learning process. My primary goal is to make each class the best learning experience possible. Since the beginning of my educational career I recognized there can be a chasm between theory and practice. This disconnect can make learning difficult and discourage students. I know my job as an educator is to fill the gap between theory and practice. For example, when teaching students how to calculate the time value of money, I also teach them how to use that knowledge when buying a house, a car, or managing their school loans. Nothing facilitates the learning process more than a dose of reality.” Forty-six CBPA Students Inducted into Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society In April, a total of 46 College of Business and Public Administration students were inducted into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi.
