Constant Hall News

October, 2006

Message From the Dean

Dr. Nancy Bagranoff

After a very busy summer, we are back in school and the semester is underway. We did not publish a summer issue of the Constant Hall News this year as we were putting together our first print annual report, which will replace the summer electronic newsletter. We have sent that report, all 36 pages of it, to more than 7,000 alumni, about 400 business school deans, and other friends and colleagues. We were so pleased to be able to put together a document that shows all that we are doing in the college.

This fall we are working on our Maintenance of Accreditation report for the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). We are scheduled for our accreditation visit in October 2007, and we are working with our AACSB team, particularly Bob Scherer from Cleveland State and Jane Finley, Belmont College, to ensure that all goes smoothly.

The CBPA launched our new undergraduate major in Maritime and Supply Chain Management this fall, and we are admitting our first students to the major. Sara Russell, our Instructor in Maritime and Supply Chain Management, is teaching a course in International Shipping this semester and also holding an Open House for prospective students and employers. The new major is being received well by the maritime community and we have received financial support from Maersk Lines Limited and CMA CGM, two of the world’s largest shipping companies. (There is more about the new major later in this newsletter.)

We have also admitted two students to our management track in the PhD program in Business Administration. These are our first management PhD candidates in ten years! We began our Executive-in-Residence speaker series for the year with Regina Williams, Norfolk’s city manager, and had a literal full house. Thanks to the hard work of Irv Hill and Bruce Rubin, our Economics Club has more than 300 members this year. Our first speaker, Bob O’Harrow, gave a very interesting and timely talk on data privacy to kick off the year.

As always, we hope you enjoy reading this issue of the Constant Hall News. Many thanks to Connie Merriman, the newsletter editor.

Dr. Shaomin Li appears in the Sept. 25 edition of The Wall Street Journal. In a letter to the editor, Dr. Li critiques the editorial-page commentary “No More Chinese Whispers” by James McGregor. McGregor's article originally appeared in the paper Sept. 12.

“Mr. McGregor fails to distinguish China the country and China the regime. We criticize the Chinese regime because it is not freely elected, and because it grossly violates basic human rights, not because we hate the Chinese people,” Dr. Li wrote.
