A good book that can help you avoid plagiarism, and that also contains guides to preparing citations, is Doing Honest Work in College, by Charles Lipson. The book was published in 2004 by The University of Chicago Press. Interestingly the book opens with information about the Wisconsin accounting students who were given a take-home exam so that they could hear a talk by Sherron Watkins, the Enron Whistleblower. These students were in a class taught by a conscienctious accounting faculty member who gave them this option as she thought it was important for them to receive an ethical lesson from Ms. Watkins. Unfortunately, in a much publicized scandal, these students cheated on this take-home examination.
An excellent book describing why we might have a greater propensity towards cheating these days is The Cheating Culture by David Callahan. This book, published by Harcourt & Co., in 2004, has stirred a national debate about the prevalence of cheating today. David Callahan will be a speaker in the Landmark Executive-in-Residence program this year and also at the Economics Club of Hampton Roads.
