Marketing Virtual Advisor
Welcome to the Virtual Advisor! This page is not meant to be a substitute for advising. Rather it is a page that provides some general advice about the most frequently asked questions by marketing students. Please visit the Undergraduate Advising pagefor further information about advising.
The Marketing Faculty take the position that all students are ultimately responsible for reading the ODU catalog, attending Block Parties, and seeking out advisors if any questions arise. ODU catalogs can be obtained from the University Bookstore in Webb Center. Block Parties are usually held 1-2 weeks prior to registration each semester. A listing of advisors, assigned according to the first letter of your last name, can be found on the bulletin board outside of the Department of Business Administration office.
What is required to minor in marketing?
In addition to the overall university and core requirements necessary for your major, a minot in marketing requires the successful completion (i.e., 2.0 overall GPA) of MKTG 311 plus any four 300/400 level marketing courses. Yes, marketing internships do count here.
What is required to major in marketing?
In addition to the overall university and business core requirements, successful completion (i.e., 2.0 overall GPA) is needed in MKTG 311, MKTG 402, MKT 407, MKTG 411, MKTG 411, plus three additional 300/400 level marketing courses.
What are Block Parties?
Block parties accomplish two goals. First, by attending, your advising block gets removed so that you can register on time. Second, you get to hear the latest and most important information about the marketing curriculum. With catalog changes and such, we use the Block Parties as a way to ensure that students understand what is expected of them in order to graduate.
Which electives should I take?
That depends on your interests and career goals. See the table below for a few suggestions on how to select some of your courses. If your interests don't appear below, meet with your advisor to discuss other options.

What is the procedure for taking courses at other intstitutions?
The university has written some very specific rules regarding transfer credit. Before you pursue this option, carefully read pages 18-19 of the 1998-2000 catalog. You definitely want to get permission from the appropriate departments in the university before you take another course elsewhere. This will ensure that your course can be transfered and applied towards graduation requirements.

IMPLEMENTATION PROCEDURES FOR NEW GENERAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
July 14, 1998
1. University parallel associate degrees (A.A., A.S., and A.A. and S.) from Richard Bland College and the Virginia Community College System (including the A.S. and A.A. and S. degrees in General Studies if earned in April 1993 or later and if modifications are satisfied by
students from Blue Ridge Community College and Northern Virginia Community College) will be accepted in fulfillment of all General Education
Requirements except those specified as requirements by colleges or departments
and the upper-level requirement which can be met through completion of (a) a second degree or major, (b) a minor, (c) an approved focus-area
cluster, or (d) an international certificate.
2. The transfer module, as modified by Old Dominion, will be accepted in fulfillment of all General Education Requirements except those
specified as requirements by colleges and departments and the upper-level requirement.
3. First-time freshmen entering in Fall 1998 or later must follow the new General Education Requirements.
4. Transfer students entering in Fall 1998 and Spring 1999 (and later, as long as they can graduate by summer 2002!) will be allowed to use the current General Education Requirements through the end of the summer session of 2002.
5. Currently enrolled students may choose to follow either the current or new General Education Requirements. The last time current students, specifically those beginning in the 1997-98 academic year, will be able to use the
current General Education Requirements is August graduation in 2003.
6. Currently enrolled and transfer students being certified for graduation in December 1998 through the summer session of 2002 may use lower-level and upper-level General Education Requirements from different catalogs. That
is, they can use the lower-level requirements from the 1996-98 Catalog, which are the current requirements, and the upper-level requirements from the 1998-2000 Catalog, which are the new requirements, and vice versa.
7. Beginning with the December 1998 graduation, students taking "U" courses to fulfill the current General Education Requirements may do so by taking:
a. Any "U" course, regardless of category or discipline (as long as the discipline is outside the major)
b. Any "K" or "T" course at the 300 or 400 level (as long as the discipline is outside the major)
c. Any course approved for an upper-level cluster (as long as the discipline is outside the major
8. Currently enrolled students who have taken one or both of their History courses using the current General Education Requirements
(120H, 121H, 130H, 131H) and who opt to use the new requirements may use these courses to fulfill the History perspective in the new General Education Requirements.
History courses from the Virginia Community College System that have transferred to meet the General Education history requirement in the
past will continue to meet General Education requirements for the history perspective.
9. For new General Education requirements that can be met through the major (computing--D courses, oral communication--R courses, and the
second requirement in natural science and technology--K or T courses), students who complete the required courses in their major that meet any of these requirements and then change to a major that doesn't meet the requirement through the major (that is, in the new major they
would select from the approved list of D, R, K, or T courses) will have met the requirement for the new major. Students who complete these
required courses in the major and then change to a major that also meets the requirement through required courses in the major will not have met
the requirement and must complete the required courses in the new major.
10. As is the case now, transfer students needing two social science courses may use two courses previously taken in the same area, rather
than two different areas, to meet the Social Science perspective.
11. As is the case now, transfer students may use laboratory courses previously taken in two different disciplines, rather than one sequence, to meet the eight-credit requirement of the Natural Science and Technology perspective. In addition, transfer students may use any three or four credit natural science course transferred in to meet the second requirement in the Natural Science and Technology perspective as long as it is in a different discipline from the "N" sequence completed.
