Maritime Institute

About The Institute

The Maritime Institute provides specialization for students in the maritime field, which includes shipping, ports and logistics management. A specialized concentration is integrated into both the existing Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Public Administration (MPA) programs, and is also available as electives in the Master of Arts in Economics. The concentration consists of 12 credit hours from the selection of courses offered by the Institute. It is now possible to complete the 12 credit-hour concentration requirement in one academic year. The course offerings are also available to students who seek a 12 credit-hour Maritime, Ports and Logistics Management Certificate.

The Institute also serves as a point of coordination between the port community and other maritime research activities in the university, including the departments of Oceanography and Biological Sciences and the Applied Marine Research Laboratory. The Institute's research program serves as Old Dominion's primary interface with the U.S. Department of Transportation's Maritime Administration in implementing programs such as those of the Maritime Enhancement Institute and various international organizations.
